I had been contemplating buying a rice cooker for a while and researched many different units available. Here I’ll tell you what I ended up getting, how I’m using it, and why I love it.

Keep It Simple

I researched for a long time and there is a huge range of rice cookers available. My first stop was to our local large Asian supermarket. I was totally surprised to find way too many choices and most of them very expensive. Most of the models were over $100 and I really didn’t know what the difference was.

I finally decided to keep it simple and purchased this Aroma 4-cup Rice Cooker for under $30. It couldn’t be easier as it has a single button that works like a toaster – push it down and the unit automatically pops the button up when it is done cooking the rice. I wanted to get something so I could get started cooking more rice and get into the habit of feeding my family more rice in general. If I find that this isn’t full-featured enough, then I will upgrade to a more advanced model.

Use It

What ever you end up selecting, make sure you use it. I stocked up on rice trying to keep a few different varieties on hand. With the simplicity and speed of a dedicated rice cooker, there is no excuse for not using it often. Even with the bare-bones unit I selected, there still is some trial and error and it takes time to figure it out. My first few batches were dry and a little on the hard side. I figured out that if I add a little more water and/or let the rice stand in the water first it turns out better. Also, rinsing the rice first really helps get rid of the excess starchiness of the finished rice.

Then Get Fancy

After using my rice cooker for a few months, I have now started to experiment more with it. Tonight I used vegetable broth instead of water and I added zucchini and tofu right into the pot when it cooked. It turned out great and my wife even went back for seconds (which doesn’t usually happen with my rice experiments)!

I am happy that I purchased something and this unit has already exceeded my expectations. What ever rice cooker you decide to purchase, I urge you to pick something and start cooking. Eating more rice is a great way to improve your vegetarian diet and it is naturally gluten-free too.

I’m going to start a regular segment called Eating Vegetarian Without Cooking. By “without cooking” I mean simple meals that can be made quickly either with no cooking at all or by using a microwave or toaster oven. I never have much time for cooking, and with three small kids I have learned a few things about feeding people (myself included) quickly, simply, and vegetarian.

Vegetarian / Vegan

Everything I feature will be vegetarian and I will make an effort to provide vegan alternatives. I have tried to be vegan in the past, but I like cheese too much and have found that the effort required to go the extra mile for vegan is too much to fit into my life right now. If you have suggestions for help on the vegan path I’d be glad to hear them.

Format

I plan on keeping these posts as simple as the meal suggestions they are documenting. I’ll have a short list of required ingredients and then step by step directions with pictures as I go along. At the end I’ll call out vegan alternatives plus any variations you can try.

This is a really simple thing, but I continually forget and rediscover the benefits of this one. The tip is: clean up your space! This can be your office, home office, living room, kitchen, anywhere that you work. If you are having a hard time concentrating or working then look around you and see if you are surrounded by clutter. Taking 10 minutes to clean up your workspace will save you more lost time in the long run. It also has the added benefit of clearing your mind so you can think better. If you haven’t touched something in a while, then you probably don’t need it so recycle it, throw it out, sell it, or donate it. You will feel much better with less stuff around you.

I hadn’t updated this blog in a while and it was a little daunting to think about all the things I wanted to acomplish. I have a list of topics I’m waiting to get down on the site and also a ton of ideas in my head for the site design. Before beginning I took a few minutes and cleaned up my home office and now I feel like I can go all night!

This is a great starting point for my future topic of reducing your possesions to live a simpler life. I’ll link to it from here once I get it written.

Also, this is a great place to introduce a new concept that I call Logan Challenges. These will be simple things that I challenge you to do. Post a comment about what you did and the results. So here is your first Logan Challenge – clean up the space you are working in right now!

So what exactly do I mean by living better? I’ll spell out in this post what type of things I’ll cover and what point of view I have.

Eating Better

I always keep the adage of “you are what you eat” in mind. What ever you put into your body becomes your body. I will cover topics like eating organic, eating healthy, eating less, and eating higher quality foods. I’ll also offer tips for food and meals.

Treating Your Body Better

After eating better, exercise is one of the most important things you can do. I’ll cover weight loss, exercise, cleansing your body, alternative healing methods like acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy, and herbal therapy.

Treating Others Better

When we strip away all the junk of daily living, we are left with basic human interactions. I’ll cover topics like getting back to basics and getting more from your relationships.

Treating Animals Better

I have been a vegetarian for 17 years now, and will cover topics of vegetarianism, animal rights, and being aware of how animals are treated.

Treating The World Better

Our world is being abused every day. We can each do our own small part to help out with the things we chose to buy, the companies we choose to patronize, and working hard to minimize our carbon- and trash- footprints on the earth.

Living Simply and Simply Living

In our day of rush-rush and consumerism, I’ll help to remind you that we all can benefit from simplifying and reducing stress. I’ll cover tips for getting back to the basics, as well as financial advice.

Inspiration For Living Better

Hopefully all of this will result in small ways to inspire you to live better. Some times it might be a complete paradigm shift while others might be just a small tip to help get you through the day. I’m not perfect myself, so I plan on working through some of these myself. I hope you decide to join me on this journey.
